Get The Most Out Of: Save-Later Streams
This week, we were going to take a look at Facebook. However, over Memorial Day weekend we released an update to our browser extension! Thus, we thought it would be best to look at Save Later Streams like Instapaper, Readability, and Pocket in this week’s edition of “Get The Most Out Of…” Mobile iOS users have been enjoying these streams for a while. They’re pretty simple once you get the hang of it, and can make consuming your information easier once you can save things for reading on your own time.

Save-Later streams & the Streamified Browser Extension
If you’re reading this, it’s possible you already have streams added to your browser extension. The good news is that adding a save-later stream follows the same procedure as the other streams you may have already enabled. Here’s how to do so (again, these instructions are modified from our extension walkthrough):
- Click on “Add New Stream” to reveal the list of streams you can add. Click on either Instapaper, Readability, or Pocket to add the account (it’s totally up to you which one to use, obviously!). Follow the instructions; the window should close by itself.
- You should see a black notification appear in the upper right corner of your browser to confirm that the stream was added successfully, as well as the stream’s icon and account name under “Streamified Settings” on the left.
If you’re a user of the free version of Instapaper, you unfortunately will not be able to view your list of saved articles directly in the Streamified extension. You’ll need to go to the Instapaper website directly. This is a limitation of the free version of Instapaper.
Due to the nature of save-later streams, you can’t post to them; they aren’t social networks! What they’re good for is saving things you want to read at a time that is more convenient for you. So let’s talk about how you can save links for later in the Streamified browser extension.
- You’ll currently only see options to “save link for later” in Facebook and Twitter posts that have an included link. Click on this option. If you have multiple save-later streams added to your extension, you’ll be prompted to select which service you’d like to use.
- You’ll see black notifications in the upper right hand corner that will verify that the links were saved. We’re working on incorporating this option into Google Reader posts when they are viewed in the browser extension. Right now you won’t see options to save links for later in this stream.
Unfortunately, due to technological limitations, we can’t integrate a save link for later option into Google+ posts.
Lastly, if you’re using Readability, Pocket, or the premium version of Instapaper, you can view your list of saved links right in the browser extension.
- Mouseover the Streamified icon in the left-side navigation bar and select the save-later stream you’ve added in order to do so.
- You’ll see all your saved links listed, and you can select a link to open and view.
Note that you can’t delete, archive, etc. a saved link directly within Streamified.
Save-Later streams & the Mobile iOS App
First, let’s add your save-later stream to Streamified.
- Open up the app and tap on the settings button in the upper left corner to go to the My Streams view. Tap on the “+” button and select the save-later stream of your choice, then follow the instructions to log in and validate the stream with the app.
- You will be prompted about whether you want to receive notifications about this Twitter stream. You can select how many new posts should be logged by the server before you receive a notification about them (hitting cancel will indicate you don’t want any notifications).
Again, if you’re a user of the free version of Instapaper, you unfortunately will not be able to view your list of saved articles directly in the Streamified extension.
Now that that’s been added, here’s how to save links for later in the mobile iOS app.
Again, if you have multiple save-later streams added, you’ll be prompted regarding which one you want to use for the saved link. There are two ways to go about it.
- You’ll see a little downwards arrow icon in the lower left corner of any post with an included link when browsing any of your streams. You can tap this to save the link for later.
- If you click a link from any post in the mobile app and load it in its entirety in the in-app browser, you can click on the arrow icon in the upper right corner to see some additional options. You’ll see an option here to save the link for later, too.
Lastly, if you’re using Readability, Pocket, or the premium version of Instapaper, you can view your list of saved links right in the browser extension.
- Navigate to your save-later stream in the app.
- You’ll see all your saved links listed, and you can select a link to open and view.
Again, note that you can’t delete, archive, etc. a saved link directly within Streamified.
